A legit celebration of African heritage is hard to find in the fashion industry, in fact in pop culture at all.

Remember Beyonce’s performance that was mistaken as hate speech by some confused people?  Of course it was because what can we expect from an industry so slow to recognize diversity?

So fashion designer and fifth-grader Egypt Ufele, or “Ify” doesn’t have the time to care about the general public’s opinion, or her bullies.

After getting body shamed by her cool classmates, she decided to create a line that would celebrate everything that makes her fabulous, or as her website puts it: “seeing what other designers won’t, capturing what others can’t.”

Her fashion line “Chubiiline” comes in all sizes and is designed in traditional African fabrics. Oddly enough, she holds the title of being the first child designer to dress curvy models. You know, since it takes a child to hire curvy models. Creating a body inclusive line is great, but it’s also a celebration of her culture, something else totally underrepresented in the fashion industry. Ify says that her line is “Bringing Africa to America, one Design at a time.” Usually it’s more common to see misrepresentation of African heritage in American fashion, Africa being disastrously appropriated. So good thing this child is here.
