According to the London Evening Standard, models are fed up with London Fashion Week’s body standards. Seven models including Gabi Fresh, Iskra Lawrence and TK, stood outside the main fashion week venue in protest for more models of different shapes, sizes and colors to be included in its upcoming runway show.
The message the models were trying to convey? That models go to extreme lengths to try and slim down to sizes below their natural healthy weight in order to fit into sample sizes and get booked for major shows.
Creative Director at Simply Be, Ed Watson arranged the protest and said, “While there’s nothing wrong with being 6ft tall and naturally thin, it’s not representative. It’s not about thin-shaming. But, what we want is more diversity on the catwalk. The average size in the UK is a size 16, and fashion should be for everyone.”
And while I’m not sure the protest will get the attention of major British fashion players like Burberry and Topshop, protests like these are vital to keep the movement going and to keep pushing the conversation forward.
