I got engaged a couple months ago, so I can personally attest to the fact that once you start planning a wedding every single experience makes you feel a certain way about yourself- especially your body. Even though I’m in fashion, I still have no idea what I see myself wearing, and when I went for the first time to try on gowns the attendant kept saying how curvy my butt is since it would hardly go over gowns. So if it happened to me, someone who knows where to shop and what silhouette to try on, the pressure has got to be even worse for real women who have no idea and are just excited to get married.
That’s why seeing pictures of curve blogger Callie Thorpe on her wedding day, and sharing the empowering message that you can look beautiful on your wedding day without changing a thing was so special to me. To see her ecstatically happy, looking drop dead gorgeous and feeling good about herself is how every bride wants to be on their big day. No one wants to feel like they have to go through some bid dramatic life change for their partner to want to spend the rest of their life with them. And even more so, no one wants to feel less than on their wedding day.
In the post she said, “I never dreamed I would wear a dress like this, I used to think that I would never get married until I was thin,” she wrote. “There were even times I doubted myself thinking I would be too self-conscious to wear it. But as you grow older and you surround yourself with the right people, you begin to realize that what you look like doesn’t really matter to those that love you. Dan has loved me at all different sizes and on the day of the wedding when I walked into the room he turned and teared as I walked towards him, he looked at me like I was magic. Plus size or not, do you not feel you have to change yourself or your size to be happy on your wedding day, your partner loves you for who you are, not just what you look like. You are deserving of happiness no matter what your size, and you will still be the most beautiful person in the room next to your love because you will be glowing with the love you have for each other.”
Her message of body positivity even on such an intensely pressured day, is one that I’ll be keeping in mind.
