Sunburns aren’t fun no matter where you get them on your body.
Usually, when you get a sunburn on your scalp, it sneaks up on you. No one wants a flaky head or one that hurts when you’re just trying to wash your hair.
But there’s nothing to fear. There are a handful of ways to protect your scalp from a sunburn this summer.
It may not be the first thing on your mind when you go outdoors, but it’s something to keep in mind for future reference, especially if you’ve ever gotten a sunburn on your scalp before.
1. Wear a hat
This might sound obvious, but a hat that covers your scalp will help prevent a sunburn from even happening in the first place. Try a cute floppy hat ($485, Net-A-Porter) for a fun day out on the beach. Just make sure it doesn’t blow away in the wind!
2. Tie your hair up
If you’re anything like me, you hate wearing hats to the beach. Why have to worry about clutching onto the thing so it doesn’t blow away when you’re trying to have fun? Just buy some hair ties ($8, Charming Charlie) and tie your hair up. Your hair will cover up your scalp, so all you have left to worry about is covering the rest of your body in sunscreen. (Don’t forget your ears!)
3. Use a pre-sun hair mist
Did you know pre-sun hair mists ($20, Birchbox) existed? I’m not a fan of sunscreen that comes in a spray can, so this is a great alternative to spray on your scalp.
4. Brush on sunscreen powder
Yes, there are powders with sunscreen in them ($30, Sephora). This comes in handy for setting your face makeup and dusting over your scalp before you head out into the sun.
