There has been a marked increase in songs that are celebratory, but Alessia Cara’s “Scars to Your Beautiful” will be on repeat in the RunwayRiot office for months to come.
She gave the exclusive to Cosmopolitan, but we are so moved by her work. She decided to feature a variety of individuals in the video – many who would not be considered societally beautiful. The individuals were curvy, cancer survivors, transgender, representatives of albinism, and many more who are telling their stories between Alessia crooning, “But there’s a hope that’s waiting for you in the dark, you should know you’re beautiful just the way you are. And you don’t have to change a thing, the world could change it’s heart.”
These beautiful individuals are reminding all of us that we are not alone. One woman says, “It’s been a struggle my whole life, feeling like I didn’t fit in…people were watching me eat and make comments.” Another says, “All those weird things, those differences…wait until you become an adult. You will realize that those differences are your greatest strengths.”
It is all things wonderful, all things Riot, and all of the inspiring. Alessia, I’ve been a fan before the fame, and I could not be more proud. Happy Birthday, and thank you.
