When looking at the photos from the Met Gala on Monday, it’s difficult to get excited about it all when there most of the women who are featured don’t fit into a sample size on the red carpet. It can start to feel like those kinds of events are so exclusive, that you have to look a certain way to be considered. Lucky for us, Katy Perry shared some thoughts on her body and rocking it regardless.
In an interview with Mashable she talked about body positivity and the pressure to fit a certain mold in Hollywood—something that most celebrities don’t even want to talk about because it’s such a constant struggle and a question that is asked of them in every interview. Katy lamented, “I’m curvy, I’m not sample-sized. This cup doesn’t fit in and my boobs are down to here. And I’m not trying to cover them either. There have been decades of bad messaging and we are rewiring now. Long gone are the days where you are not socially aware. You can’t unsee all that crazy shit and not try to do something to change it.”
In her position as an international pop star, the burdens that come with the territory are often so heavy that it’s no surprise when you hear of stars leaving the spotlight, or taking time off. People expect celebrities to be perfect in every single way, and depending on your definition of perfect, that has a lot to do with size and body positivity as well. And with artists, more than anything they have an audience to please, and a constant crowd of people judging them from head to toe. People are watching her every move, whether she gains weight or loses weight, and often times that microscope is so harsh that it leaves no room for celebrities like her to make mistakes or even worse, just being themselves in any way, shape or form that they are.
She went on to say, “I think owning the terms is on an individual basis. It’s about what you want to call yourself. We don’t see ourselves in the same way. I know for me, I’m curvy or sample-sized but I represent a lot of people out there. I want to be relatable.”
Because she is so outspoken about her body among other things, it’s no wonder that she’s still the most followed Twitter account in the world. Girl’s got things to say, and we want to hear them.
