If you’re reading this and you haven’t hit puberty yet then CONGRATS! Balmain is launching cool new threads for you to dirty up on the playground. Have a juicebox to celebrate.
Balmain’s children’s collection, which WWD announced today, will feature 55 cool styles for girls and boys ages six to fourteen. If we had kids and/or a savings account, we’d be thrilled to hear this announcement (maybe). But we don’t have either, and this news really ticks us off because curvier adult women over a size 12 still can’t get their hands on cool Balmain threads. Meanwhile, kids who likely can’t even spell “Balmain”, “Rousteing”, or “Kardashian” get to wear super trendy blazers , and that’s swell.
On the matter, creative director Olivier Rousteing said, “These are the same looks that, over the years, moms and dads have repeatedly pleaded with me to produce for their kids.” How nice for the kids to now be included in the fashionable affair. We’re sure this will make some fancy people’s Christmas card outfit coordination efforts go more smoothly. Yay.
It’s cool that this is happening when curvy women with places to go are stuck buying their blazers from Lane Bryant, Macy’s, or some other dimly-lit store where finding something semi-fashionable is like finding your earring back on a tile floor without your glasses on. It also has to be a fun time for a loaded and curvy mom when her pre-teen has access to Balmain before she does.
In case Rousteing isn’t aware, women are pleading for designer clothing in their sizes, too, even if it’s just a lame clothing collaboration with H&M (which also only went up to a 12). It’s nice of him to answer SOMEBODY’S plea (let’s be real, it was totally Kimye looking out for North West’s personal brand), but what kind of message does this send? Kids are more of a priority to the Balmain dynasty than the majority of women who currently can’t fit into their black and gold nonsense? Cool.
Anyway, enjoy your $5,950 dresses while they last, kids, because one day when you grow up and your body fills out, you might land in the same no-Balmain zone as the rest of us.
