Guys! Guys? Something worth going to Cuba for is happening.
A video of curvier women from the Voluminosa Dance School in Havana doing ballet is here thanks to Agence France-Presse, and these dancers do not disappoint. Prancing, stretching, and balancing, they’re swanning around in white tutus all over the stage serving prima ballerina vibes.
In the neverending age of idiotic barriers, it makes sense that people would laugh at anyone who isn’t slim and statuesque doing something beautiful and graceful with movement. AFP talked to one dancer, Rubi Amaro about that, and here’s what she said translated into English.
“At first it wasn’t easy because people laughed. They didn’t like it, but others did. And now with time, through work and seriousness, the public pays more attention to the choreography to the theaters, and they don’t mock us anymore.”
In a field with minimal actual diversity, this a refreshing eye cleanse. The recognition that this needed to happen should tie us all together closer than Beyoncé’s album drop.
