Today our girl Dascha Polanco is calling out designers who have refused to dress her curves in their threads.
In a sit-down interview with Rolling Out TV, Polanco opened up about comparing her body type to the Western ‘ideal’ when she came to America. Turns out, even for a baller actress who gets to hang out with J-Law, it hasn’t been all daisies and roses when it comes to getting a fire gown to wear on the red carpet. Polanco said:
“Growing up I never knew that I couldn’t fit into a size zero because culturally I was the body type, right? Once you come to America and you see what the standard is in the media, then that’s when you start questioning, well, am I the same as everybody else? Is this acceptable? I don’t really fit into these things. And now from a professional standpoint there’s a lot of brands that don’t want to dress me because I’m not a sample size. “
She then let designers know she’s not here for their shenanigans. She said:
“You know, it just goes to show I have a decision as well. I don’t have to dress with your clothing. It’s not me waiting for you to dress me now. I choose who I want to be dressed by. So, times are changing and little by little the barriers will be broken. It’s a process, step by step. And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who feels that way.”
Light the fireworks here because that’s the kind of real talk we were looking for today. We know Dascha’s got more important stuff on her agenda than sitting around waiting for designers to get a clue like a ’90s teen waiting patiently by the desktop computer for their AIM crush to log on. And we like what she’s getting at. If a designer isn’t excited about her curves, why should she even take another peep at their sample size frocks?
She’s a boss, and designers should be knocking down her door to clothe her in something sheer. Something NOT black. Subtle move, Hollywood, but the woman looks hot in colors too. Obviously it would be cool if Dascha got the same designer treatment as other straight size women in the biz. Ah well, another day, another dream.
Watch below and let Dascha be your 2016 #goals.
