Tina Turner is best remembered flying across the stage like human fire in knee-high slits, a hundred tassels as long as garden hoses. Scream-singing her brain out to the sky, Tina’s music just rammed into you. So did her consistent ferocious style when she was tearing it up onstage.

Everyone knows she defined the word survivor before Destiny’s Child sang “survivor,” but she rarely stopped serving up fashion. Even when she had jaundice at the same time she was pregnant with Ike’s kid when Ike had gone back to his wife, she didn’t stop. In a personal essay, she wrote “I mean my bloodstream was infested. It was killing me, and I hadn’t realized it. Well, I was pregnant too, of course. Not showing yet, though – I walked into that hospital in a tight dress and high heels, honey.”

Incidentally, lying there in pain is when she came up with “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” because Ike’s wife was getting suspicious and Tina had hoped for better for herself. Because she couldn’t make people talk in a huge bright orange maternity suit, Tina actually designed her own sack dress with an overlay of chiffon on top so that no one could tell she was starting to burst.

Anyway, she’s a rock legend who knew how to wear microminis, long thick wigs or spiky hair, and more than anyone’s fair share of tassels. With her liquid moves in a plunging crisp white suit or a fringe bodysuit, she had everyone’s eyes and all the rock and roll glory.
