Have you noticed our obsession with Serena Williams? I mean she is a 22 Grand Slamp Champion and we’ve talked about her impeccable selfies showing off her body, her constant desire to take out body shaming for women in sports and plenty more. But in her recent Self Magazine cover, we got to know the queen of sports a little bit better, an opportunity we will gladly take at any moment’s notice.
Giving us reason to love her even more, Williams noted that she knows the power that she holds in women’s minds and the influence that she has with young girls who don’t have a lot of figures to look up to. “I love my body, and I would never change anything about it. I’m not asking you to like my body. I’m just asking you to let me be me. Because I’m going to influence a girl who does look like me, and I want her to feel good about herself.”
It’s refreshing to hear that Serena understands the impression that young girls get when they see a powerful, curvy, black woman dominating a predominantly Caucasian sport. She is giving women of color a glimmer of hope and opportunity that they too could do something that completely pushes the boundaries and creates a new space for women that was never open before.
