Pageants haven’t exactly been a hit for curvy women—and while we have reported on curvy women competing, and making a point to stand up for women of all size, there hasn’t been many improvements on the outdated tradition and ideals that the pageant thrives on.
USA Today reported this morning that for the Miss Teen USA pageants, there will no longer be a swimsuit portion, and instead all 51 women will be judged in athletic wear. And while the swimsuit portion was designed to show off athleticism of competitors, we all know it has evolved into more of a way to judge women based on their size and the body standards of women instead of their abilities.
The reigning Miss Teen USA said, “I have been an athlete my entire life. As a member of a softball team and a competitive dance team, I spend a lot of time in athletic wear. This new direction for Miss Teen USA is a great way to celebrate the active lives that so many young women lead and set a strong example for our peers.” And it’s about time! Hopefully they make this change to the Miss USA pageants soon as well.
