Let’s get real, being body-posi can be exhausting. The media is always telling you to look different, people feel it necessary to explain to you what they find attractive (rude), and all the while haters find it cute to comment on your photos. There are days when it would be easier to run and hide, but those are the days where you need a friend like Lucky Garcia.
“To a certain extent, body shaming by women really shows unhappiness in oneself and just how damaging the current beauty standard really is,” said Garcia. It is the classic grown-up version of middle school girls picking on one another because they are not happy with themselves, but how do we deal with that? “The best way to deal with confronting a bully is to do it with intent, strength, and confidence. A bully is a bully because of their own insecurities,” said Garcia.
Needless to say, she hit the nail on the head. We cannot be bothered with bullies no matter what size you are. But self-love isn’t just about brushing off the haters, it’s also about accepting yourself for who you are right now, not just the potential of who you could be. That can be even harder. Fortunately for all of us, Lucky seems to have a good handle on what the next steps are.
“Rejecting what society deems beautiful; women are multi-faceted and racially diverse goddesses,” said Garcia. “If we continue to support each other and body positive movements like #effyourbeautystandards and Plus Size Girls Can’t on a mainstream level, reclamation will happen. It’s all about embracing yourself and truly loving the skin you’re in.”
Girl. PREACH. Every single, solitary woman/man/non-gender conforming human you know needs to hear this. We must un-teach the nasty lessons we have heard our entire lives. RunwayRiot works to spread the message every day, but we cannot do it without you, our community. Lucky gets that too.
“The driving force is happiness and community, social media plays a big role in connecting women in positivity,” said Garcia.
Rioters like Lucky give us a reason to get up to do this work every morning. She’s a model riot member, and we couldn’t be more fortunate to have her as a part of our gang. Thank you for everything you do, Lucky.
