Let’s talk about the color nude. It isn’t really color, but more of a descriptor for something that is a natural tone. However in the fashion industry, nude is a color. A color, that has excluded most people of color. Recently, fashion and beauty brands have taken steps to remind everyone that nude actually means a variety of skin tones. The brands that offer a diverse range of “nudes” is limited but the brands that do, get it right.
Christian Louboutin has carved out a spot in fashion with his outrageously fun shoes and famous red soles. Already a favorite among many shoe lovers, in 2013 he decided to launch a line of nude shoes in five shades. Fast forward to 2016 and that collection now boasts seven shades (of course they all have the iconic red bottom).
Nubian Skin is the answer for all of the nude underthing needs. Typically, plenty of “nude” undergarments and stockings only come in one or two nude shades. Nubian Skin offers a variety of shades in a variety of styles. Nubian Skin isn’t only inclusive when it comes to color, but also in sizes. Earlier this year, the undergarment designer launched a line of stockings in a variety of sizes too and they’re going to extend the range further. Well-played.
Bloch the dance gear supplier listened to ballet dancer Eric Underwood when he posted a video of himself applying makeup to his shoes in order to match his skin tone. The Royal Ballet soloist and Bloch have partnered up to create a line of ballet shoes that serve dancers of color. The shoes are not available to the public yet, but Underwood is getting a test run. If you look closely, you can see them.
L’Oreal‘s La Palette Nude eye shadow palette and color rich lipsticks offer nude colors for ALL skin tones. The lipsticks get selected by skin tone ensuring the perfect nude match for your skin and the palettes offer shadows to pull off a subdued smokey eye for any shade.
Zoya neutral nail polish offers a variety of nudes to match any skin tone. Many nail polish brands have nude colors, however what sets apart Zoya is the staggering amount of neutral colors they offer. There are tons of nude nail polishes, that can match pretty much anyone’s skin tone.
Mac is known for offering a variety of skin tone foundations but where Mac really shines is that their shadows and lipsticks are incredibly pigmented. So those colors SCREAM at you. Their inclusivity reaches beyond the beauty counter too — their advertisements star a diverse range of celebries, producing lines that celebrate women of color, like the Selina Quintanilla collection everyone asked for set to launch in October. Also they’re doing trolls.
